What are some ideas for portrait background choices?
Another consideration in what to wear for a portrait
What’s the best background for a portrait? Once you’ve established where you going to display your portrait (see previous blog post http://barbaraglaeserphotography.com/?p=90), another piece of the puzzle of what to wear is to consider the portrait background.
Women should choose their outfits first!
In my experience, women have the hardest time choosing clothing for themselves. So I always have them bring multiple outfits for them to the consultation. Mary brought me a jacket and a pretty teal top. She liked this background with the sprinkling of bright colors. With those two parameters she knew just what clothing colors to recommend to the rest of the family. I think she did a wonderful job of pulling everyone together.
Examples of portrait backgrounds and how we decided on the clothing
Jessica wanted the portrait at home in her living room, so the wall color was the starting point. The colors on the wall and in the paintings are bright and bold. The family wearing cream linen was the perfect choice. Notice that the little girl is wearing a sash that matches the pillows.
Happy memories in Washington DC. With the capital building in the background the clothing is more professional and urban. Ginny had some coral pink color in her living room and this portrait is above the fireplace. I did tweak the color of the flowers to match her room more closely.
This client wanted a casual location at Great Falls Park. They are dressed in earth tones to compliment the water falls, rocks, fall colors and stream.
Next time we’ll talk about how your lifestyle can affect your clothing choices for the portrait.
Have a lovely day,
