Non-traditional portraits for a blogger
Alyson wanted a creative author portrait for a book jacket and blog site. During our chat I found out she didn’t want a traditional looking portrait because her books are not mainstream. She describes them as “Fiction that makes you think.”
The creative process
At our consultation we talked about her books, she showed me photographs of faces and graphics that she thought were interesting from her research. She brought lots of outfits and accessories with rich colors. My job was to sift through all the information and help this young woman come up with a branded author portrait. To brand her image we settled on teal as the main color theme.
The final book jacket photo is a seated pose with her notebook, pen and glasses. The lighting is strong to enhance the overall concept of unique. She is wearing a teal hair ornament with a feather and a dress with colors that complement teal. I wanted the background and chair to blend into the background so she could be the center of focus. Notice the red rust color notebook that compliments her dress and the way her arm leads you to the face and notebook – her trademarks.
Photos for the blog
We just had fun
All the photographs of this young woman are character studies. She’s just having fun while I’m watching for perfect lighting, variety and pleasing views of her face.
Message to readers
The elements of color, posing, fun, lighting and delight come together to create photographs to promote her business as an author.
“I’m so happy to have a couple of creative, well-lit and well-shot portraits that make me appear both independent-minded and pulled together.” Regards, Alyson
